In the dark - Camera Obscura

Published 24 Jun 2009 in General by Ben

We were recently sent this email and thought it was kinda cool so thought we'd post it... enjoy :)

Hello Ben

We are Tom Carey and Sean Chilvers, two graduates from Kingston University. We thought you might like to see one of our projects called 'In the dark - Camera Obscura' (pictures attached). We created a camera obscura by blacking out an entire bedroom and leaving just a small hole. The image of the street outside was projected onto the walls of the room. We then covered the hole, lined the bedroom walls with photographic paper and then opened the hole, exposing the paper for 3 minutes. We then took down the photographic paper, developed it in the dark room and put it back up where it had been created. We really like the use of technique and process to produce a piece that responds directly to the title, 'In the Dark'.

We would love to hear what you think.
Kind regards,

Tom and Sean

Peter Saville D&AD President's Lecture

Published 18 Mar 2009 in General by Ben

We took a trip down to London Town last week to go and hear the legendary Peter Saville kick off this spring's series of D&AD President's Lectures (http://www.dandad.org/buy/presidents-lectures.html) at Logan Hall, London (aplogies for the delay in getting this up onto the blog).

Peter Saville helped define the look of an era in his work with Factory Records and the Madchester scene of the 1990s; he's revered for his album covers for Joy Division and Suede, and has won a stationery shop's worth of D&AD Pencils.

Saville was refreshingly opinionated and the place was packed - the crowd struggled to fit into the large auditorium so a screen was set up outside for people who couldn’t find a seat.

Controversially he said: ‘No one should be designing record covers after the age of 30’, and ‘Music covers are not graphic design, they do not communicate anything, they have no purpose in that respect.’

The enjoyable evening was very nicely rounded off with a few beers in the good company of our friends Peter Crnokrak (The Luxury of Protest) and his lovely lady Karen, Alex Lampe and Benji Wiedemann (A+B Studio) and Cameron Ewing  (Nick Bell Design).

Big shout to Darren Firth for a brilliant night  last night (hangover central today). 'Exploring the lost 'art" of the film poster' is an outstanding exhibition on show until 13th June 08 at the Cosh Gallery, Soho, London. 40+ creatives were given the task of creating their own interpretation of a cult classic or obscure film poster from the past whether it be a literal or abstract solution. Well worth a visit. http://www.wearitwithpride.com/?#projectscurrent
